Malcolm
Bowie Prize 2008

The Society for French Studies is pleased to announce the
results of the Malcolm Bowie prize 2008, which will be presented
at the Society’s annual conference to be held this
year at the University of Oxford (June 29-July 1).
The winner is Dr Luke Sunderland (Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge),
for his article 'Le Cycle de Renart: From the Enfances
to the Jugement in a Cyclical Roman de Renart
Manuscript’, French Studies, 62 (2008), 1-12.
The runner-up is Dr Simon Kemp (St John’s College, Oxford),
for his article ‘Darrieussecq’s Mind’, French
Studies, 62 (2008), 429-441.
In addition, the Jury wished to commend the following:
Dr Rachel Chrastil (Xavier University), for her article ‘The
French Red Cross, War Readiness, and Civil Society, 1866–1914’,
French Historical Studies, 31 (2008), 445-476
Dr Kris Pint (Hasselt and Ghent Universities), for his article ‘How
to Become What One Is: Roland Barthes’s Final Fantasy’,
Paragraph, 31 (2008), 38-49
The prize is awarded annually for the best article in any area of
French Studies published by an early career researcher, defined
for the 2008 prize as a scholar who received his/ her PhD within
the period 2003-2008. For the 2008 prize there were 20 nominations,
which included articles from 12 different journals and 3 volumes
of essays. The 2008 prize was judged by a Jury comprised of Antoine
Compagnon, Alison Finch, Simon Gaunt, Edward Hughes, and Toril Moi.
